About The Incident
On Saturday, September 23, at around 7:45 AM, Grosse Ile police said they got a report that a boat had capsized close to the Ford Yacht Club in Grosse Ile Township. The 18-foot aluminum Starcraft boat was discovered “drifting offshore with damage to the bow portion of the vessel,” according to authorities.
The boat’s driver, Hunter Polgar, a 23-year-old native of Grosse Ile Township, was reportedly pulled from the ocean around 5:40 PM that same day. His reason for death wasn’t known right away. Police were awaiting the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s findings.
According to Deputy Police Chief Todd Brozek, Polgar drove alone when the collision occurred. Polgar’s body has been sent to Wayne County Medical Examiner.
The Wayne County Sheriff Department Marine and Dive Team, the Downriver Mutual Aid Dive Team, the United States Coast Guard Station Belle Isle, and Air Station Detroit assisted in the search operation along with the Grosse Ile Police and Fire Departments.
The cause of the boat’s capsize, or the police did not disclose any potential damage. The incident was classified as a “watercraft accident,” and an inquiry was ongoing.
Although Brozek is confident they know what happened, he plans to hold off on speaking until they have all the facts. By the end of the week, he hopes to have some new information to give on that. The department is still investigating the circumstances leading up to the collision.
